sleepy-malesWe’re young and restless, these are some troubled times, so unfortunately sleeping is not one of our top priorities – not when we have to party and have fun, work extra hours for extra money and spend some time online, too. However, it is really unfortunate that this is happening, because the lack of sleeping could cause severe damage to our bodies – damage that we might never be able to make up for! In this article, I will analyze the most important problems caused by the lack of sleeping and hopefully you will learn that health is more important, in the long run, than anything else!

But first, let’s find out what happens with our body when we’re sleeping. The most important thing that occurs is the regeneration of the cells in the entire body (including the brain), then the regeneration of muscular tissue. Also, while we’re sleeping, the brain processes and archives the informations and memories, and that is one of the reasons why students tend to remember better the things they learn if they sleep after classes!

Therefore, not sleeping will cause a lot of problems in your body and trigger all sorts of chain reaction. Basically, each night in which you don’t get enough sleep adds a new brick to the tower of debt you have for your body. And if you’re consuming the bad coffee, energizing drinks or food supplements to keep you full of energy, you’re doing nothing but forcing your body even more and risking even more!

Try to remember how you feel after just one night in which you don’t get too much sleep: you’re tired, you feel dizzy, you find it hard to focus and some things are simply harder to remember than usual. Now try to multiply this with the amount of days in the past year in which you didn’t get enough sleep and imagine how your body feels! Eventually, if you keep forcing your body to function without enough sleep, you’ll start accusing terrible headaches, you’ll feel nausea, you’ll have uncontrollable anger and even hallucinations! Actually, some studies claim that a professional driver that didn’t sleep for 17 to 19 hours are driving much worse than they would if they were drunk. This doesn’t mean that being drunk and driving is a smart thing to do!yawning-for-sleep

However, that’s not all the harm sleepless nights cause! Your body, being so much under pressure, will be able to process glucose 40% slower and, since it’s glucose that gives us energy, the effects are even worse! Also, growth hormones as well as the regeneration of muscle tissue is slower and, atop of these all, our immune system also suffers badly and it’s the immune system that helps us fight against all diseases, be them a common cold or cancer!

And these are just some of the biggest problems caused by a lack of sleep in our lives! The bad effects are even more and, no matter if at first we can mask the tiredness at first with supplements or eventually get used to it and get used to function at lower levels, nothing compares with a good “treatment” at home in which we have to sleep at least eight hours per night.

Don’t take the classic “eight hours per night” as a definitive rule! There are still some lucky people that can function flawlessly with just 5-6 hours of sleep per night, while others need at least 9-10 hours. It all depends on our own metabolism and it’s best to check out and find out how much time we actually need to stay healthy.

We might be young and we might not think about the future, but let’s just try to do it a little: we still need to be healthy 20, 30 and 40 years for now. There are so many good things to do in life!
