purplepeeLately, the medical journals keep reporting cases of patients with purple urine (or purple pee), so I guess that answers the biggest question: Is it possible to have a purple pee? But why do you have it? Let’s find out below!

Most likely, the purple pee is caused by a huge growth of Providencia rettgeri, a bacteria that produces ammonia and influences the color of urine. Typically, this type of infection occurs to older patients, but younger people are reported with this strange case.

Another reason why you could have a purple pee is the result of the degradation of indoxyl sulfate by other forms of bacteria like Providencia stuartii, Escherichia coli, P. aeruginosa or Klebsiella pneumoniae. In both cases, there are no other symptoms (fever, feeling sick and so on).

So, if we know what causes purple pee now – should you worry if you get it? The answer is not completely sure, but it tends to be “no”: the infection can be treated and in just a few days, as the urine gets more acid and the bacteria is eliminated.
