Best Dog Breeds that Help with Anxiety

Dogs are not called “man’s best friend” for no reason: they are loyal and compassionate and they even have healing powers for the mind.

It appears that dogs can help tremendously those who are suffering of depression or anxiety and even though I personally believe that any dog breed can prove to be extremely helpful, there are some considered better than others and we’re here to talk about them: the best dog breeds that help with anxiety and depression.

I am sure you already know that if you’re suffering from depression or anxiety, any bit of extra help is extremely welcome and if you don’t have a dog friend nearby, you should seriously consider getting one. And now let’s see what your options are – the best dog breeds to help you fight anxiety!

Corgi

This breed has gained quite some popularity recently – mostly because the Welsh Corgi is the favorite of the Queen of England.

And she seems to be pretty happy, right? Well, the truth is that Corgis are great for people suffering from anxiety or depression, as they are extremely loyal and compassionate. They were used as herding dogs and they will get extremely attached to their owners, being always there for them.

They are probably the most active and certainly the most vocal on this list, which for some might be a problem. But if you can appreciate the extra influx of energy given by their behavior, you’re in for a great ride!

Labrador Retriever

The Lab is an extremely friendly dog which happens to be very intelligent and easy to train too. Despite being one of the largest dog breeds on this list – which makes them less portable – they are kind and gentle and can grow very attached to their owners. Even though they are pretty active, they have a lot of lazy spells that will surely help you relax.

Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terriers were amongst the first dog breeds used for actual therapy – with the first mention dating back to World War II when it was a dog of this breed that was used by a doctor to increase the morale of the soldiers – and with great results.

Today, the happy and cute Yorkshire Terrier has the same uplifting effects and it certainly is one of the best choices for those fighting depression or anxiety. They are extremely intelligent and affectionate, but also friendly with other people and dogs. Being so small, they are portable so you can take your living cure anywhere you go!

Cocker Spaniel

One of the best possible dog breeds to help you fight anxiety, the Cocker Spaniel is an extremely calm and affectionate dog, while also very smart and easy to train.

They are extremely friendly with other people and dogs too and even though they require a bit of grooming, I consider than a bonus since they allow you to spend some time together and take your mind off your problems while taking care of your little friend.

Great Dane

This dog breed is certainly not the best choice for all people dealing with anxiety because of its extremely large size and, as a result, the resources that you have to spend on keeping it well fed. However, despite its large size, it is extremely friendly and calm (often called the “Gentle Giant”).

He is extremely affectionate and really calm, even lazy sometimes, but it has its goofy moments as well. Just think about the fact that Scooby Doo is a Great Dane and you know you’ll have a great time near this dog. Minus the mystery solving, though!

I am sure that no matter which of the dog breeds mentioned above you will choose to be your companion over the years, it will help tremendously with your anxiety and will play a major role in you getting over this problem.
